The lessons learned from the scholarship application process are just as valuable as the educational opportunities offered. Whatever the outcome, you will reflect on the steps you have taken on your personal and academic journey and, more importantly, chart out the course for the longer-term impact you hope to make.
- Zeyi Lin, UT Nominee for the Marshall Scholarship
I think we're always led to believe that these scholarships are unattainable for "normal people" or that they're only a possibility for some mythical perfect or highly privileged student, but that's just not the case. Everyone has passions, dreams, goals, or whatever, and if you can articulate that well in an applications and interviews, you've got a chance. The Marshall Scholarship application process gave me that skill and I am continuously grateful for it.
- Bailey Anderson, Marshall Scholar
I truly think that every student should apply for postgraduate fellowships, even--and perhaps especially--if you can't imagine yourself winning one of these scholarships. Regardless of the outcome, the application process is incredibly valuable and taught me so much about my goals and ambitions. You have nothing to lose by applying.
- Mikaila Smith, Rhodes Scholar
Simply put, applying to the Rhodes Scholarship will be one of the most exhilarating, challenging, and rewarding journeys you will embark on. If you are still debating whether to apply, I implore you to do so. You will gain invaluable knowledge and experience about yourself, your scholarship, and you just might change the world while you’re at it.
- Enrique Vargas, UT Nominee for the Rhodes Scholarship
Applying for the Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships was an invaluable experience because it asked me to reflect on my undergraduate years and set concrete goals for my future. Articulating my hopes and dreams in essays—to be read by strangers—forced me to provide the “whys:” to figure out how I fit into the fabric of society, determine why my goals matter, and furnish a roadmap to them. Without this process, I would have felt much more adrift upon graduation.
